Cutting the number down
Fuel cost has exactly three inputs: distance, efficiency and price. Distance is mostly fixed by where you live and work. Price is fixed by the state government. That leaves efficiency, which is the only lever you fully control — and it is worth 10-15% with basic discipline.

How is fuel cost per kilometre calculated?
Divide the price of one unit of fuel by your car’s efficiency. A car returning 15 km/l with petrol at ₹95 per litre costs ₹6.33 per kilometre. In mpg terms, 35 mpg at $3.30 a gallon works out to about $0.094 per mile. For CNG use price per kg and km/kg; for an EV use price per kWh and km/kWh.
Should I use the ARAI mileage or my real mileage in this calculator?
Always use your real figure. Official test-cycle numbers — ARAI in India, WLTP in Europe, EPA in the United States — are laboratory results and will understate your actual spend, typically by 20-30% for ARAI. Measure yours with the mileage calculator first, or use the real-world figure we publish on each car page.
How much does a 500 km trip cost?
At 15 km/l and ₹95 per litre, a 500 km trip needs about 33 litres and costs roughly ₹3,167. A diesel returning 20 km/l at ₹88 costs about ₹2,200 for the same distance, and a CNG car at 22 km/kg and ₹75 costs about ₹1,705.
