CNG vs Petrol vs Diesel in 2026: The Real Running Cost Maths
A full cost-per-kilometre breakdown across fuel types including purchase premium, servicing, resale and the break-even distance for each.
The 'which fuel should I buy' question has one honest answer: it depends entirely on how many kilometres you drive per year. Here is the arithmetic.
Cost per kilometre, fuel only
Using Delhi prices (petrol ₹94.77/l, diesel ₹87.67/l, CNG ₹75.09/kg, electricity ₹8/kWh) and a typical compact SUV:

The purchase premium
Fuel cost alone is misleading, because the cheaper-to-run options cost more to buy:
- CNG: ₹90,000 - ₹1,00,000 over the equivalent petrol
- Diesel: ₹1,20,000 - ₹1,50,000 over petrol, where still offered
- Strong hybrid: ₹1,80,000 - ₹2,50,000 over the mild-hybrid petrol
- Electric: highly variable; ₹2,00,000 - ₹5,00,000 over a comparable petrol
Break-even distance
Divide the premium by the per-kilometre saving:

At 12,000 km a year, CNG pays back in under three years, diesel in about six, and a hybrid in about seven. At 30,000 km a year — a common figure for commercial use — CNG pays back in 13 months.
The costs people forget
Servicing
Diesel service intervals cost 20-40% more than petrol, largely due to DPF and AdBlue systems on BS6 cars. CNG requires a mandatory cylinder hydro-test every three years (roughly ₹3,500) and slightly more frequent spark plug changes.
Boot space
A single-cylinder CNG tank eats most of your boot. Twin-cylinder layouts (Tata iCNG, Hyundai Hy-CNG Duo) recover a usable amount but not all of it.
Diesel and short trips
BS6 diesels need regular highway running to regenerate the diesel particulate filter. If your commute is 8 km through traffic, a diesel will accumulate soot, throw warnings, and cost you money. Do not buy a BS6 diesel for a short city commute.
Resale
Diesel resale has softened as cities discuss age-based restrictions. Delhi-NCR already de-registers diesel cars at 10 years versus 15 for petrol, which materially hits residual value.
The short version
- Under 10,000 km/year: petrol, no question.
- 10,000-20,000 km/year, mostly city: CNG if you have filling stations nearby, otherwise a strong hybrid.
- Over 20,000 km/year with highway running: diesel still wins.
- Home charging available and under 150 km/day: electric beats everything on running cost.
