EV vs Petrol Car in India: Five-Year Cost of Ownership Compared
Battery degradation, charging costs, insurance, resale and the real break-even point for electric cars in Indian conditions.
Electric cars win on running cost by a margin so large it is almost boring. The interesting question is whether the purchase premium, charging friction and residual value uncertainty cancel that out.
Energy cost
A typical Indian compact EV consumes 6-7 km per kWh in mixed driving. At a residential slab rate of ₹8/kWh that is roughly ₹1.20 per kilometre. A comparable petrol hatchback at 16 km/l and ₹95/litre costs ₹5.94/km. Over 15,000 km a year, that is a saving of about ₹71,000 annually.
Public DC fast charging changes the picture. At ₹18-24/kWh, an EV costs ₹3.00-3.70/km — still cheaper than petrol, but only by about 40% rather than 80%. An EV without home or office charging loses most of its financial case.
Maintenance
No oil changes, no filters, no clutch, no exhaust. Brake pads last far longer because regenerative braking does most of the work. Budget roughly ₹4,000-6,000 a year against ₹12,000-18,000 for an equivalent petrol car.
Insurance
EV insurance premiums run 15-25% higher because of battery replacement risk, partly offset by the lower IDV-linked base rate on the discounted ex-showroom price.
Battery degradation
Indian summer heat is harder on lithium-ion packs than temperate climates. Expect 8-12% capacity loss over five years and 60,000-80,000 km on an actively cooled pack, more on an air-cooled one. Most manufacturers warrant the battery for 8 years or 1,60,000 km to 70% capacity.
Resale
This is the genuine risk. EV residuals are still volatile because buyers cannot easily assess battery health and because new models keep undercutting old ones on range. Assume a steeper depreciation curve than an equivalent petrol car for now.

Roughly break-even at 15,000 km a year with home charging. Above 20,000 km a year the EV wins clearly. Below 10,000 km a year, buy the petrol car.
